How to play Queens

Queens is a placement logic puzzle played on a square grid divided into colored regions. Your goal is to place crowns so that every row, every column, and every colored region contains exactly one crown, and no two crowns touch each other, not even diagonally.

It is inspired by the classic eight queens problem from chess, but the colored regions make each board a fresh deduction puzzle. A typical Puzji Queens board takes four to six minutes, and every board is generated with a valid solution that careful logic can reach.

Queens strategy tips

Start with the smallest region

A region with only two or three cells has very few places for its crown. Look at those regions first; often one of their cells is the only option once rows and columns are considered.

Mark the neighbors of every crown

As soon as you place a crown, mark X on all eight surrounding cells and on the rest of its row and column. Clearing impossible cells early makes the next forced move easy to see.

Look for regions locked to one row or column

If every cell of a region sits in the same row, that region's crown must be in that row, so you can mark X on all other cells of that row. The same logic works for columns and for pairs of regions that share two rows.

Count remaining options

When a row, column, or region has only one unmarked cell left, the crown must go there. Scan the board for these single options after every move.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Forgetting the diagonal rule: two crowns that touch only at a corner still break the puzzle.
• Guessing a crown position early and then building on it. Use X marks to keep track of what is impossible instead.
• Checking rows and columns but ignoring regions. Every color needs exactly one crown too.
